China & the Olympics

China is reaping the whirlwind of its own bad actions in Tibet. The summer Olympic games in Beijing in July 2008 were supposed to be the crowning glory of its entry into the big boys club, a new knight in 'democracy's' mail. That's a laugh. Listening to the IOC's president say that the games in Beijing will have a civilising effect on China, must set its leaders gaffawing till they choke for air. If anything the Chinese leader think it is the IOC who are follows and uncivilised. 18Brumaire is quite sure that in 1936 the IOC used the same arguments to justify Herr Hitler's Germany hosting the summer games.
Bless 'les journalistes sans frontieres' and the brave young Tibetans who breached the polite little ceremony in Athens at the historic site of the first Olympics, who called for a boycott of the games and yelled 'free Tibet'! They poked the finger in the eye of puffery, and proved oh how wrong the IOC's and China's propaganda are. The IOC says the 25.000 or so journalists who will flock to Beijing for the games, will be able to discover any hanky panky in freedom of the press. How naive can you be, since China will do everything to discourage any bad news and with force and stealth and outright lying. The Chinese will have to deal with being a pariah nation for a while, for even now torch bearers of the Olympic flame are coping out in protest. China deserves what it gets for its treatment of the Tibetans, and while we are saying that, and oppresing the Ouighars in Xinjiang. A pox on its house!
